El Cerrito Honors Most Influential Rabbi In Modern History

Mayor Gabriel Quinto to Mark 116th Anniversary of the Rebbe's Date of Birth with "Education & Sharing Day"

El Cerrito joins communities worldwide in marking the 116th anniversary of the date of birth of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, on March 27th of this year.

Often described as the most influential rabbi in modern history, the Rebbe’s visionary efforts to reconnect Jews everywhere with their Jewish heritage have touched millions of lives and forever transformed the landscape of Jewish life. His teachings which emphasized the inherent goodness of mankind, the infinite potential within every individual and the profound value of even the smallest good deed, inspired multitudes around and resonated globally.

Rabbi Schneerson was the only rabbi ever to receive the Congressional Gold Medal and to have an American national day proclaimed in his honor, Education and Sharing Day. His role within the Jewish community was unparalleled, both as a preeminent scholar and as an indefatigable leader.

Throughout his lifetime, Rabbi Schneerson advocated that education should not be limited to the acquisition of knowledge and preparation for a career, rather the educational system should pay more attention, indeed the main attention, to the building of character, with emphasis on moral and ethical values.

In commemoration of the anniversary, El Cerrito mayor Gabriel Quinto has proclaimed March 27, 2018, as “Education & Sharing Day” in the city of El Cerrito, and called on "educators, volunteers and residents to reach out to young people and work to create a better, brighter, and more hopefull future for all".

Rabbi Yanky Bell, Rabbi at Chabad of El Cerrito, noted that this message is especially timely as we prepare to celebrate the Holiday of Passover. The Passover Seder teaches us how to respond to the unique needs of four different types of children with everlasting inspiration and hope.
