Fourth Grader Wins Madera Elementary School Spelling Bee

Tiffany Zhang now moves on to the Contra Costa County Spelling Bee Feb. 22.

Feb. 8, 2021

Tiffany Zhang, 4th grader, won the Madera Spelling Bee after 18 rounds. Tiffany won by spelling the word "voracious". Fifth grader Hannah Ibser took second place and sixth grader Natalí Cox took third place. Tiffany moves on to the Contra Costa County Spelling Bee on February 22.

All the participants in the spelling bee were the top spellers from each 4th, 5th, and 6th grade class. The spelling bee was held on Zoom this year and participants spelled words such as "psychiatrist", "itinerary", and "subjugation”.

Retired teacher Mr. Danysh was the pronouncer, continuing his role of the last 9 years. Joe Takano and Lloyd Lee-Lim were the parent volunteers for the past 8 years and 6 years respectively, and will pass the role onto new parent volunteers for next year.
