Free Seminar by Rev Dr. John Buehrens, Sept 2 & 9, 2018 at 9:30am

Free seminars on Transcendentalism at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Berkeley on Sept 2 and 9 at 9:30 am by Rev Dr. John Buehrens.

The Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church of Berkeley (1 Lawson Road, Kensington, CA 94707, above the Arlington at Moeser, through Terrace and Craft) invites the public to free seminars given by Rev. Dr. John Buehrens on the “Transcendentalists: Roots and Wings.” He is a former UUA President, retired Senior Minister of the First UU Society of San Francisco and the author of six books, the latest of which is Transcendentalist Disciples: Spiritual Friendships Among Boston Leaders for Anti-Slavery, Women’s Rights, and Social Reform, 1830-1885.

On Sept 2, Rev. Buehrens will discuss: “What You Don’t Know You Don’t Know About the Transcendentalists:” He says “Most of us associate the Transcendentalists with Emerson, Thoreau, individualism and Concord. Yet most of them were committed church leaders, their activism was centered in Boston, and included some dramatic moments, especially in the anti-slavery movement.” On Sept 9, his topic will be “The Forgotten Female Transcendentalists; ” he will discuss why we should know more about such women as Elizabeth Peabody, Margaret Fuller, Lydia Maria Child, Caroline Healey Dall, and Julia Ward Howe, among others. Brief stories of each will help to expand our understanding of the Transcendentalists’ role in helping to launch the American movement for women’s rights. Fireside Room. All welcome! Free!
