Inmate Dies In Possible Suicide At Richmond Jail

The 42-year-old from Antioch was found in his cell with a bedsheet around his neck, Contra Costa County sheriff's deputies said.

RICHMOND, CA — A 42-year old inmate from Antioch died Saturday in an apparent suicide inside his jail cell at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond, according to authorities.

Gregory Lynds was found unresponsive with a bed sheet wrapped around his neck at about 6:15 p.m. by a deputy, who was escorting a mental-health clinician to speak with an inmate, Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesperson Jimmy Lee said.

Deputies and jail medical staff provided life-saving measures until an ambulance and the fire department arrived, and Lynds was later pronounced deceased at the scene, he said. The case is being investigated as an apparent suicide by the sheriff's department and the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office.
