K-9 Catches Reckless Driver After High Speed Chase Through Richmond Ends in Crash: Police

Officials credit the canine for catching a suspect who allegedly drove more than 90 mph through city streets then took off running.

RICHMOND, CA- An alleged reckless driver is in custody following a high-speed chase through city streets with thanks to Richmond Police K-9 Ruger, according to a report from PD officials.

Officials reported in a social media post that a vehicle traveling in excess of 90 mph drove past an officer in the city limits Tuesday evening.

“The officer described the reckless car over the police radio,” said the post, “Moments later, another officer saw the described car slam into a traffic barrier in the BART parking lot.”

Officials say the car struck the barrier with such force it drove on two wheels for a short period.

The suspect reportedly continued driving until colliding into a road barrier, where officials say he took off running.

“K-9 Officer Vallerga and his Belgium Malinois canine partner Ruger responded to the scene,” said RPD officials, “Ruger put his nose to work and sniffed out the suspect who was hiding under an occupied house.”

The suspect was reportedly arrested for multiple violations, including two prior arrest warrants.
