Teaching Focus and Why It's Critical

The ability to focus one's attention is at the core of critical thinking and problem solving.

You Can Teach Focus – As children show up to school with shorter and shorter attention spans, teachers often try anything they can to ‘capture the attention’ of students with fast-moving activities and flashy lessons. Unfortunately, this works only to exacerbate the issue of the inability to focus.

Teaching focus is essential in today’s classroom. The ability to focus one’s attention is at the core of critical thinking and problem solving. Without it, one becomes reliant on technology or other people’s opinions. We’ve seen time and time again that a child’s math struggles will not get in the way of her focus, but her inability to focus will get in the way of math – and all learning.
