Cheerios Announces Recall On Boxes Of Original, Honey Nut

Cheerios announced Monday a recall of certain original and Honey Nut Cheerios boxes that were labeled gluten-free but may contain wheat flour anyway.

The company did not say how many boxes were affected but said that they were “produced during a two-week time period in July” at a Lodi, California, production facility, “may contain wheat and were wrongly labeled gluten-free.”

General Mills, the parent company of Cheerios, had announced in February that five of its Cheerios varieties — original, frosted, apple cinnamon, honey nut and multi-grain — were going gluten-free.

The company announced Lucky Charms was going gluten-free in July.

The problem that led to the current Cheerios recall occurred during this transition.

“The company believes this isolated incident resulted in wheat flour being inadvertently introduced into the gluten free oat flour system at its Lodi facility, introducing an undeclared allergen – wheat – into products labeled as gluten free.”

The Cheerios statement says that products tested before and after the recall code dates were certified gluten-free by the FDA.

The company also said the products were safe for people who aren’t celiac and don’t have a gluten allergy.

“We want to reassure you that this was an isolated incident, and we have implemented a solution to ensure that this will not happen again,” the statement said.

To see you have one of the boxes of Cheerios that contain wheat, the company says to check the “Better if Used By” date on the top of the box.
