Elk Grove Police Arrest Suspect in Sunday Night Killing of Joseph Oropesa

Ryan Hays, 25, is suspected of shooting 19-year-old Joseph Oropesa in the head in the Dimple Records parking lot.

Elk Grove police found and arrested Wednesday night the man they believe is responsible for the of 19-year-old Joseph Oropesa in the parking lot.

, 25, was located at a house in rural Stanislaus County and booked into Sacramento County jail on charges of murder, robbery and carjacking, police said.

Police said they also found nearby the 1992 Ford Explorer Oropesa had driven to the record store, which Hays allegedly used to flee the crime scene—but not the gun used in the shooting.

Detectives have not yet established a motive for the killing, Trim said.

"He [Hays] hasn't provided any information for us, so we'll have to rely on the detectives to determine what the motive was based on their investigation," Trim said.

Police responding to a report of gunfire outside the Elk Grove Florin Road record store around 9:30 p.m. Sunday found Oropesa lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. Oropesa died later that night at a local hospital, and police quickly .

Trim said the department received "dozens of tips" from community members which helped lead to Hays's arrest.
