Former Florin High School Student Dies After Giving Birth at Benedict College

A Sacramento teenager bled to death after reportedly giving birth to a stillborn baby from her dorm room.

A former Florin High School student bled to death after giving birth from within her dorm room at Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., according to news reports.

Ayaanah Gibson, 19, of Sacramento, was approximately 32 weeks pregnant and had a natural, spontaneous childbirth sometime Saturday or early Sunday, according to the NBC-affiliate WMBF News.

Authorities found her body on Tuesday, in her dormitory room, along with the child who was reportedly not alive at birth.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is quoted in this story to have said that Gibson would have survived if she had sought medical attention. There was no evidence that she sought prenatal care, according to the story.

The college released the following statement: "The Benedict College family is deeply saddened this evening about the unexpected loss of one of its students. Please join the Benedict College family in praying for our fallen Tiger and her family. President David H. Swinton along with the Campus Minister, Student Government Leaders, and the Director of Campus Counseling spoke with students this evening in Antisdel Chapel about the unfortunate incident. After the meeting everyone in the Chapel held hands and prayed together as a family."

Please share your words of support and condolences for Gibson's family in the comments section of this story.
