Northern California Man Dies In Triathlon
Gary Grunwald, 61, of Elk Grove, died while competing during the run portion of the USA Triathlon.

ELK GROVE, CA -- A Northern California man died Sunday while competing in the USA Triathlon in Grand Rapids, Michigan, race officials confirmed Monday. Officials in a statement said they were "deeply saddened" to announce the death of Gary Grunwald, 61, of Elk Grove.
Grunwald died during the running portion of USA Triathlon Clydesdale & Athena National Championships.
"The sport lost a member of its beloved community, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Gary’s family and friends," the statement read. "USA Triathlon is working closely with Tris4Health, organizer of the Grand Rapids Triathlon and host of the Clydesdale & Athena Nationals, to collect more information."

Officials did not say what the cause of death.
The event attracted more than 160 athletes.
