Running of the Elk Gallery: Add Your Photos

More than 2,000 runners participated in Elk Grove's first annual half-marathon/5K event.

The weather cleared up just in time for Sunday's Running of the Elk half-marathon and 5K race.

More than 2,000 runners aged pre-teen to 88, many sporting fake antlers, made their way along flat courses that wove through fields near the Elk Grove Auto Mall. Another 100-plus volunteers ensured the event went smoothly.

Racers came from around Northern California to participate in the event, which benefited the Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation.

"It was a great race," said Dianne Sandoval, who came from Rocklin with her husband, Fernando. "I liked seeing the horses running in the fields as I ran by."

Hundreds of runners and spectators stopped by the Patch table to chat with our staff and pick up T-shirts and tote bags. It was exciting to meet so many Patch readers and hear your feedback about the site.
