SEE: Cop Slams Pedestrian To Pavement, Punches Him Multiple Times

Officials say the Sacramento Police Officer is on 'administrative leave' after a suspected jaywalking incident turned violent.

SACRAMENTO, CA — The Sacramento Police Officer who is seen on video beating a man has been placed on administrative leave. Police aren't releasing the name of the officer, but they have released a statement that calls his actions "unacceptable."

The incident happened at 5:07 p.m. Monday in North Sacramento. Police say the officer attempted to stop the man, later identified by FOX40 as 24-year-old Nandi Cain, Jr. who was "observed crossing the street unlawfully." The officer then got out of his patrol car and tried to detain him, but the suspect walked away.

This is where the stories diverge.

Police say Cain began removing his jacket, "challenging the officer to fight," but Cain maintains he was taking off his jacket to show the officer he wasn't carrying any weapons.

"I'm not going to give this man any reason to kill me, to gun me down," Cain said. "I could've tried to fight back but that's when guns would've been pulled out and I would've gotten shot. I would've been dead."

Dashcam video shows the officer telling Cain to "get down on the ground" multiple times. Then, for what police are calling "unknown reasons," the officer throws Cain to the ground and punches him in the face multiple times.

Cain was held in a Sacramento Jail, but police say he was released Tuesday morning due to “insufficient grounds to file a complaint.”
