5 Things: Flying, Cartooning, Dining, Driving and a Little Wildlife
Patch's quick take on the essential things to know, the most interesting things to do and best places to be on Thursday, July 25.

If you have an event you'd like us to consider for Five Things, be sure to add it to the events calendar. We check it often!
- Van Nuys Airport is celebrating it's 85th anniversary with a contest that will have you up in the air -- literally. Send your most memorable stories, photos and videos of this famous Valley landmark for a new website, and you might win one of three flights for two with legendary aviator Clay Lacy aboard his sleek Learjet 35. Click here for the details.
- Cartoon characters don't just spring to life. Someone has to draw them. A professional cartoonist will teach a class for teens 4 p.m. at the Encino-Tarzana Public Library, 18231 Ventura Blvd. And if their parents want to stick around, the Book Lovers Book Club meets at 5:30 p.m. Call (818) 343-1983 for information.
- Celebrate Culinarians Day today by visiting a restaurant participating in dineLA which runs through July 26 showcasing the Southland's premier dining destinations. Enjoy a selection of specially priced prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus. Oh, Culinarians Day? It was established as a reminder to appreciate all the individuals who prepare your meals on a daily basis.
- Gas Buddy has logged all the fill-up prices in Encino and Tarzana, so click here instead of driving around looking for the cheapest gas. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular in Los Angeles County dropped Wednesday to $4.099. That's 4.1 cents lower than one month ago but 28 cents higher than one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
- Roaring Nights at the Zoo ends this evening with local bands like So Many Wizards, CHIEF, and NO, as well as DJ Morningstar, stand-up comedians, food trucks, bar service, and more. So if you are up for a little wildlife, click here for details. You must be 18 or older. Admission is $18 or $15 for KCRW and Zoo members. Use the discount code "KCRW" at checkout.
