Labor Day: What’s Closed, What’s Open

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 5.

Labor Day celebrates the many social and economic achievements of American workers: the 40-hour workweek, the 8-hour workday, the right to be safe in the workplace, a minimum wage, pensions, health insurance and many other benefits.

Today we'll head to a barbecue or enjoy the hot bargains in store for shoppers at Labor Day sales. We'll put away our white pants because that's the color worn by Americans well-to-do enough to decamp from their city digs to warmer climates for months at a time. But most of all, we'll relax, enjoy our day off from work and say thanks.

Here is a list of what’s open and what’s closed in observance of the holiday:

Government offices

Most government offices will be closed Monday.

Mail

will be closed Monday. Express mail will be delivered.

Trash

Trash will not be picked up on Monday (Monday pick-ups will be on Tuesday). Trash collection will be one day late for the remainder of the week.

Buses

In observance of Labor Day, Metrolink will suspend all service except for two round-trips on the Antelope Valley Line on Monday. The Antelope Valley Line extends from L.A. Union Station to Lancaster, with stops in between at Glendale, Downtown Burbank, Sun Valley, Sylmar/San Fernando, Newhall, Santa Clarita, Via Princessa, Vincent Grade/Acton and Palmdale. Normal service will resume on Tuesday.

Grocery stores

Most grocery stores and supermarkets are open with regular hours Monday, include , andin Encino.

Banks

Most standalone banks and credit unions will be closed. However, in-store branches such as the US Bank located inside on Ventura Boulevard and Hayvenhurst will be open.

Library

The will be closed Monday.

Medical

Most medical providers will be closed Monday, with a few exceptions.

Schools

All area schools will be closed Monday.

Shopping

Convenience stores and most retail stores will be open. Look for those deep Labor Day discounts!
