Man Killed After LAPD Cruiser's Rear Window Shatters

The Van Nuys incident took place while stopped at a light. It was unknown whether cops were ambushed of victim was involved.

A police car, stopped at a red light in Van Nuys, had its rear window suddenly shattered, and one person was shot dead moments later, police said today.

The two Los Angeles police officers in the car were not injured, and it was not immediately clear what shattered the police car window, said Officer Mike Lopez of the LAPD’s Media Relations Section.

It’s also unknown if the deceased man was someone who tried a street- corner ambush.

The shooting took place at 11:30 p.m. Saturday at Victory and Sepulveda boulevards, said Sgt. Carl Taylor of the LAPD’s Van Nuys station.

According to preliminary details released by police, after the rear window shattered the officers bailed out of their car and an “officer-involved shooting” occurred, Lopez said.

A representative from the coroner’s office was dispatched to the scene at 5:40 a.m., said Lt. Fred Corral of the coroner’s office.
