VAN NUYS, CA – Clarence F. Smith Daylight Lodge No. 866, Free and Accepted Masons (CFS Daylight Lodge) will celebrate the September 17, 1787, signing of the US Constitution at its upcoming Zoom fellowship meeting on September 4, 2020.

The Grand Master of Masons in California proclaimed September to be Constitutional Observance Month. CFS Daylight Lodge’s celebration fulfills the mandate to honor this revered document, the Framers who wrote it, and the republic that resulted from it.

The online presentation on September 4 will be led by Brother David I. Karp, a 29 year Mason and a lawyer for 40 years with a keen interest in Constitutional Law. Among other things, he will review some of the personal rights granted in the amendments to the Constitution.

Why do Masons honor the Constitution? In his Proclamation for September, Most Worshipful John E. Trauner, Grand Master of Masons in California, declares:

“Freemasons played a central role in the founding of the republic, and in so doing imbued in our constitution many of the values that are central to the fraternity. . . . By publicly celebrating the links between our fraternity and the foundational values inscribed in the constitution, Masons highlight not only their historical significance but also their continued relevance today and into the future.”

13 of the 39 men who signed the U.S. Constitution (33%) were Freemasons. Of course that included George Washington and Benjamin Franklin among others. See, http://bessel.org/constmas.htm

In other news, the members of CFS Daylight Lodge are continuing their efforts to help other people, even while the lodge is dark because of the pandemic, as was earlier highlighted in this article: https://patch.com/california/encino/masonic-relief-philippines-provided-valley-masons .

Some, for instance, are making donations to the California Masonic Foundation’s Distressed Worthy Brother Relief Fund (for Masons experiencing COVID-19-related hardship). Others are collecting clothing and other items for donation to the Midnight Mission downtown. There is even an effort underway to honor first responders with the donation of donuts or bagels or the like.

Why? As the Grand Master of Masons in California states in the September Proclamation for Constitutional Observance Month: “[A]s Masons, we strive to set an example for others in our society and communities through demonstrating compassion, kindness, temperance, and respect alongside the tenets of brotherly love, relief, and truth.”

CFS Daylight Lodge is committed setting that example locally.
