Ballot Selfies: Is It OK to Snap a Pic in California?

There's an important question to consider when you walk into your polling place: Is it OK to take a picture with your ballot?

With early voting underway for the November election, there's one extra issue voters need to consider: Is it OK to take a "ballot selfie"?

For folks who already share their daily activities and opinions regularly on social media, talking a picture in the ballot booth might seem ordinary, but it's not legal yet, say state elections officials.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill that repealed a 125-year-old law barring voters from showing people their marked ballots. But the new law allowing ballot "selfies" doesn't kick in for a few months.

"Our guidance will remain unchanged until Jan. 1, 2017, when the new law goes into effect," Jana Lean, chief of the secretary of state's elections division, wrote in a memo to county officials, according to the LA Times.

Still, legislative analysts have found no occasion of the ban being enforced in California, according to reports.
