Bicyclist Killed In Crash At Escondido Intersection

ESCONDIDO, CA — A 21-year-old bicyclist who ran a stop sign at an Escondido intersection Friday was struck and killed by a vehicle, authorities reported.

The man was riding north on Cedar Street when the eastbound 2014 Dodge Caravan struck him at East Grand Avenue about 8 a.m., according to police.

Medics tried in vain to revive the bicyclist before pronouncing him dead at the scene, Lt. Scott Walters said. The Escondido resident's name was withheld pending family notification.

The 39-year-old Escondido man behind the wheel of the minivan was uninjured.

Investigators determined that the bicyclist failed to yield for a stop sign just prior to the deadly collision, the lieutenant said.

The road crossing remained closed for investigative purposes into the early afternoon, along with the eastbound lanes of Grand between Beech and Date streets, according to police.
