DUI Suspected In Wrong-Way Crash On 1-15: CHP

A woman was ejected from her car when she crashed into a freeway zipper machine​ early Wednesday morning.

ESCONDIDO, CA — A woman suspected of driving under the influence drove the wrong way on Interstate 15 in Escondido and plowed into a freeway zipper machine early Wednesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The woman, whose age was not immediately available, was taken to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of major injuries, California Highway Patrol Officer Jim Bettencourt said.

Several motorists called 911 shortly before 1 a.m. to report a 2018 Honda Civic sedan heading southbound in the northbound lanes of I-15 near Via Rancho Parkway, Bettencourt said.

A short time later, the sedan crashed into a zipper barrier machine, and the driver was ejected from the car, 10News reported. Her Toyota was destroyed in the crash, and there were no passengers in the car with her.

Intoxication was believed to have been a factor in the crash, the officer said.
