ESCONDIDO, CA — A man has died after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning in Escondido.

The Escondido Police Department received a report around 7 a.m. about a man hitting cars with a "metal pole" in the area of 2nd Ave and Broadway, police Lt. Kevin Toth said.

"The man was armed with a large metal object when he was contacted by the first officer on scene," Toth said.

"During the contact, one officer shot at the man striking him. The events leading up to the officer-involved shooting and the actions of the man are currently under investigation. Officers rendered first aid until Escondido Fire Paramedics arrived on scene."

The man was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries, Toth said.

His identity was not released. The subject was only described as a white man.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's office was investing the cause of death.
