10 Years of Iraq War Casualties: Fair Oaks & Carmichael Remember 3 Fallen Heroes

It's been 10 years since the start of the Iraq War. Fair Oaks lost two soldiers and Carmichael lost one.

The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week -- on March 19, 2003 -- and although officially "over," the fighting continues.

By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting.

In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count. Among them, a soldiers from Fair Oaks & Carmichael: 

  • Genaro Acosta, 26. Killed when his Bradley fighting vehicle hit and detonated two roadside bombs while on patrol in Taji, Iraq, on November 11, 2003. (Fair Oaks)
  • Ronald Lee Coffelt, 36. Died of wounds suffered from a roadside bomb in Baghdad, Iraq, on July 19, 2007. (Fair Oaks)
  • Raymond Nigel Spencer Jr., 23. Died of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked by insurgents using a roadside bomb and small-arms fire in Baghdad, Iraq, on June 21, 2007. (Carmichael)
