Del Campo Student-Athletes Honored During Scholarship Ceremony

Students, parents and staff joined together to honor five outstanding Cougar athletes.

Though the headlines might lead some to believe otherwise, .

That's just one of the bits of advice Gary Summerhays, athletic director, reminded parents, students and fellow staff members of Wednesday evening during a reception to honor five students on their achievements.

"I know a lot more about being young than you know about being old," Summerhays said. "Start with the end in mind; that way you'll know where you want to be."

Seniors Hanah Howell, Norman Sadler, Daniel Manfred, and Rebecca Mueller had plenty to be proud of and Del Campo coaches and staff, along with Summerhays, wanted to let them know it.

"We've got about 1,900 students and this is a pretty elite group," said Del Campo principal Vera Vaccaro. "Many kids don't get athletic scholarships. I couldn't be more proud to have these students going on to college and representing Del Campo."

Each of the students wil be heading in different directions when the current school year ends. Howell, a shortstop, will attend Concordia University in Irvine on a softball scholarship. Sadler will travel to Cal Poly on a football scholarship where he plans on continuing his play at running back.

Rushing, a cross country runner, hopes to build on his school record-setting mile run of 4 minutes, 12 seconds, when he attends UC Davis on a cross country and track scholarship. Mueller will travel across the country to the College of Charleston in South Carolina on a softball scholarship. Manfred joins fellow Fair Oaks scholarship-awarded student athletes KJ Logue and Christopher Schwartz-Edmisten as he travels to Dominican University on a soccer scholarship.

Parents, family, friends and coaches watched proudly and took pictures of the student-athletes.

"I'm really proud of all of them, especially my kid; she's worked really hard," said Mueller's father Dean. "It's tough. I didn't want her to go so far but I trust (the coach) with my kid and (Rebecca) fell in love with the program and the school."

Sadler's mother Erica is prepared to make the journey to San Luis Obispo to root her son on during home games.

"It's really great to see Norman because we moved from Miami," Erica Sadler said of her son. "I was very impressed with him because he was in love with Cal Poly for their strong academics (Norman will major in mechanical engineering) and he had offers from Purdue, Kansas and Arkansas."

"We're proud of him," Sadler said. "I've reserved rental cars for all of his home games."
