Hiring Center Busy for Walmart Neighborhood Market

Doug Stanley of Carmichael works in construction and has found it difficult to find work in the tough economic climate.

Stanley was at a temporary hiring center for a this week.

"I'm applying for an overnight stocking position," he said. "I'm hopeful to start a new career."

Stanley was one of a few hundred applicants who have come to the hiring center in the Harvard Business Park at 5777 Madison Ave., Suite 121, since it opened on July 30. The new Neighborhood Market, to be located in late October next to a in the location of a former Sports Authority shop, is hiring for 75 positions including supervisors, cashiers and pharmacy technicians, said store manager Carl Porter.

"People not even looking for a job have found us and they've referred us to people who are looking," Porter said."We're looking for the most qualified and friendliest people."

Porter said applicants have ranged from teenagers to senior citizens. Some have been waiting in line at 7 a.m. each day before the hiring center opens at 8 a.m. They must fill out an online application, which can be done at the hiring center, before being considered for an interview.

He said the Walmart Neighborhood Market is a new concept for California, offering groceries and produce, a pharmacy and a few non-food items such as automotive supplies and will be open 24 hours.

"We're happy to come to the neighborhood," Porter said.
