Rio Americano Alum on US Olympic Fencing Team

James Williams, a 2003 graduate of the Carmichael-area school, is on the US Fencing team. Williams received a bye in the first round of the men's individual sabre event and his first match is set for Sunday against Nikolay Kovalev of Russia.

Williams has a U.S. ranking of No. 3 and is No. 32 in the world, according to the US Fencing website. He was a member of the 2008 silver medal-winning men's saber team in Beijing and the 2011 gold medal-winning Pan American Games team.

Williams has been ranked as high as No. 18 in the world, according to US Fencing. In 2012, he has won gold medals in the January North American Cup and the USA Fencing National Championships.

Williams has a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in U.S. History and Russian and a Master's degree from Columbia in Slavic cultures, according to US Fencing. His parents are John and Mae Williams.
