Safe & Sane Firework Sales Start Today

Eleven local nonprofits and organizations have been preparing for today: The beginning of firework sales.

Safe and sane fireworks go up for sale at  at noon today, June 28. Sales continue from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. through July 4. Our map shows all throughout town.

Safe and sane fireworks are legal in Fair Oaks. Fireworks can be used in Fair Oaks starting at noon today and through 11:59 p.m. July 4, according to the Sacramento Fire District.

In conjunction with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, Sac Metro Fire has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal fireworks this year, meaning anyone caught with illegal fireworks will receive a citation without warning. The fine for possession of illegal fireworks can be hefty — you could face a more than $500 fine for the misdemeanor or imprisonment for up to one year. Anyone with a "sufficient amount" of illegal fireworks could face up to $5,000 in fines and/or time in a state prison or county jail, according to the Sheriff's Department.

Know someone selling or using illegal fireworks? Call the Sheriff's Department at 916-876-5700. District fire stations 108, 31 and 32 at 6701 Winding Way, 7950 California Ave. and 8890 Roediger Lane respectively can also be used as a drop-off points to turn in illegal fireworks.

Tips for a safe Fourth:

• Have an adult light fireworks
• Whoever lights the fireworks should wear eye protection
• Give adequate clearance when lighting fireworks
• Only use fireworks outdoors away from homes, dry grass and trees
• To extinguish fireworks, submerge them in a bucket filled with water for a few minutes before placing them in the garbage can
