State Public Instruction Superintendent Recognizes Del Campo's Successful AVID Program

Tom Torlakson visited school to see AVID program in action.

California's state superintendent of public instruction visited last month, officials announced.

Tom Torlakson paid a visit to Del Campo on June 4 to see first-hand the impact of the college-readiness program  on San Juan Unified students.

Torlakson was joined by California Department of Education officials; David Gordon, superintendent of the Sacramento County Office of Education; San Juan Unified Superintendent Glynn Thompson, Del Campo AVID coordinator Diane Boyd and others, according to a district news release.

Torlakson visited classrooms and heard from students about the impact of the program, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and assists underserved youths in the academic middle to prepare them for college.

Del Campo has been recognized by AVID as a National Demonstration School for its success, according to the district release. It typically serves more than 200 students each year and boasts a more than 90 percent four-year college acceptance rate.
