California lawmaker gives hand to Kaiser Permanente MLK Day Volunteers
"Day of Service" team from KP Redwood City gets a boost from Assembly member Mullin
California Assembly member Kevin Mullin normally helps put laws on the books, but this day, he was seen packing books, helping Kaiser Permanente spiff up the Taft Elementary School in Redwood City, CA. Most of the books were children’s texts, not law books.
It was the annual Kaiser Permanente Day of Service, honoring the Dr.Martin Luther King Holiday. For 11 years, the medical system has treated MLK Day as “a day on, not off”, and organized teams of volunteers to work in the community on beautification projects.
Assembly member Mullin joined a team of more than a dozen volunteers that spent the day painting classrooms, packing books for donations, and doing general fix-up work to make the Taft School environment for pleasant for learning.
“It was great to join all the Kaiser Permanente volunteers at Taft Elementary School in Redwood City today”, said Mullin as he worked next to Kaiser Permanente’s Stacey Wagner of the Redwood City Medical Center.
Kaiser’s mission statement includes the dedication to help improve the health of the communities it serves. Nationwide, close to 6,000 Kaiser Permanente volunteers worked on projects in 116 sites serving more than 87,000 community members last year.
This year, Kaiser Permanente Northern California focused on schools, because of the critical role they play is keeping our community healthy and thriving.
“Dr. King’s legacy of working to make the world a better place has never been more important,” said Assembly member Mullin as he packed up children’s’ books, “ and I applaud Kaiser Permanente’s long standing commitment to this day of service and making the communities they serve a better place.”
The KP Redwood City health care workers who volunteered at Taft School also brought along family members and friends to help with the work.
