Foster City Man Charged In Local DUI, Hit-And-Run

San Mateo County district attorney officials say the man hit a bicyclist.

FOSTER CITY, CA — An alleged drunk driver who struck and injured a bicyclist in Foster City on Monday and then fled has been charged with multiple felonies, San Mateo County prosecutors said this week.

Gregory Datwyler, a 50-year-old Foster City resident, struck a 27-year-old man riding his bike on Hillsdale Boulevard shortly after 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to the district attorney's office.

The victim fell and suffered broken teeth, facial lacerations and other injuries, while Datwyler allegedly drove off without stopping, prosecutors said.

However, about 25 minutes later he pulled into the parking lot of the Foster City Police Department nearly a mile away, and told an officer, "I'm the one you're looking for, I hit the guy," prosecutors said.

Damage to his car matched evidence from the collision scene and Datwyler appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. A breath test found his blood-alcohol content was .17, according to the district attorney's office.

Datwyler, who has a prior drunk driving conviction in 2009, was arrested and charged with hit-and-run and DUI causing great bodily injury, with enhancements for having a blood-alcohol content above .15 and for having a DUI conviction within 10 years of the new offense.

He didn't enter a plea during his initial court hearing Wednesday and will return to court next on April 25. He remains in custody on $100,000 bail.
