Foster City Wins Award For Sustainability Achievements
The 2019 Gold Level Beacon Award recognizes city governments' environmental efforts and progress.
FOSTER CITY, CA — The Institute for Local Government named the City of Foster City as a winner of the 2019 Gold Level Beacon Award for its Environmental Sustainability Programs, according to officials.
Foster City was recognized for the following achievements:
- Platinum Level Award for 20% Community Greenhouse Gas Reductions (improving from 8% reductions and Silver Level Award in 2015)
- Platinum Level Award for 23% Agency Greenhouse Gas Reductions
- Platinum Level Award for 20% Agency Energy Savings
- Gold Level Award for 13% Natural Gas Savings Reductions
- Platinum Level Award in Sustainability Best Practices
In 2017, Foster City won a Silver Level Beacon Award, officials said.

“Environmental stewardship is the responsibility of the whole community, said Mayor Sam Hinidi, who will accept the award at the October League of California Cities Annual Conference in Long Beach. "We share this award with every resident, employee, and visitor who lives, works, and plays in Foster City. We will continue to look for bold, innovative ways to protect our natural world and keep our environment healthy for future generations.”
The Beacon Award Program is a cumulative, on-going program and recognizes cities and counties working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, and adopt policies and programs that promote sustainability.
