King Tides and Sea-Level Rise

Citizen science is simple.

On November 15th and 16th residents of Foster City will have the opportunity to participate in a very important science project. The project will produce data that will be used to improve our understanding of how sea-level rise will impact our city.
The only requirement is to go for a walk and use your photographic talents. Collecting data is key for doing good science, so first decide where to take your pictures and when to visit these sites. As, Foster City is basically surrounded by water finding a site will not be difficult to select. A couple of things to consider: Choose a photo site with a reference point to better display changes in tidal height in your picture and time your visit to match the highest point of the tide (around 12pm). And it is that simple.
This form of citizen science will provide visual data for decision makers to better adapt to the impacts of sea-level rise. As the water level rises in the South Bay it will be vital to have data that provides information as to where to make adaptations and improvements to our levee systems.
So, plan on taking a walk today or tomorrow at 12pm and bring your camera. Submit your pictures to California King Tide Project, and your efforts will be greatly appreciated.
Enjoy your walk and be safe!
