Dog Shot by Garden Grove Police Officer

GARDEN GROVE, CA -- Garden Grove police revealed Monday that an officer fatally wounded a pit bull while serving a search warrant on a suspected narcotics dealer in neighboring Westminster.

Garden Grove officers investigating "narcotics activity" in the city obtained a search warrant for a residence in the 7300 block of Wyoming Street in Westminster, according to Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney.

While serving the search warrant in the home last Wednesday, the officers encountered a dog in a bedroom and tried to subdue the canine with a fire extinguisher and an animal control pole, Whitney said. The dog, however, got out of the house and "aggressively charged" officers outside, he said.

As the animal tried to bite one of the officers, an officer fired off several rounds and wounded the dog, who later died, Whitney said.

Police recovered drugs, three rifles and ammunition in the house, Whitney said, along with a stolen sheriff's deputy's ballistics helmet.

Officers arrested Steve Pudiquet, 57, who posted bail out Thursday, according to jail records.
