Fired Teacher Causes 'Shelter In Place' at Huntington Beach High

A teacher fired a year ago was spotted today on the campus of Huntington Beach High School, triggering a “shelter in place” protocol for students and educators for about three hours, police said.

A staff member at the high school at 1905 Main St. saw the former teacher about 8:30 a.m. Because the instructor had been fired, apparently had no business to conduct on campus and had not checked in with the school’s office, the employee notified police, according to Officer Jennifer Marlatt.

The school was placed on a “shelter in place” protocol in which instruction continues but students and educators remain where they are, Marlatt said.

When the fired teacher saw the employee, he “walked away,” she said. The officer did not know if the two exchanged any words.

The “shelter in place” order was lifted at noon after police scoured the campus and found no sign of the fired teacher, who did not appear to have any weapons and did not make any threats, Marlatt said.
