Former LA Laker and OC Native Jack Haley Dies at 51

Funeral services were pending today for Jack Haley, a 6-10 center and power forward who played for UCLA and spent nine years in the NBA, including one with the Lakers, and won a championship with the Chicago Bulls.

Haley, 51, died Monday at Los Alamitos Medical Center, according to the Orange County coroner. His family said he suffered from heart disease.

“It is with great sadness that the Haley family announces the passing of our beloved father, son and brother,” according to a statement from the family. “Our hearts are broken by this sudden, unexpected loss. Jack was honored and grateful for the opportunity to play in the NBA for nine years, alongside world-class athletes with the Los Angeles Lakers, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs and New Jersey Nets. He cherished every moment and gave 100 percent whether on or off the court.”

Haley played with the Lakers in 1991-92.

“Jack was a hard worker and always very professional,” Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak said. “He was proud to wear the Lakers uniform and he was always a credit to our organization and the Lakers family. Our condolences go out to his family and friends at this time.”

Haley was a member of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team that won the NBA championship, even though he was injured for the majority of the season.

He served as an assistant coach in New Jersey after his playing days ended, and was a broadcaster on Lakers pre-game shows.

Haley was married with two sons.
