Lobos Snap Streak of 68 Straight Losses to La Quinta

Nobody beats Los Amigos 69 times in a row.

The Lobos baseball team made history Friday, beating La Quinta 8-4, the first win over the Aztecs in 30 years of Lobos baseball.

"They were 68-0 against us, but now we're 1-0 against them," Los Amigos head coach Art Maltby told his team after the game. "You made everyone who's ever walked through these doors and onto this field proud today."

The Lobos showed discipline at the plate and on the basepaths in a back-and-forth game that was tied 4-4 before the Lobos got four runs in the bottom of the sixth, two of which came on a bases-loaded walk. With the runners moving on the pitch, Jorge Bedolla was able to score all the way from second base after ball four got away from La Quinta's catcher.

Somehat overshadowed by the wild game was the pitching performance by Lobos senior Gerardo Hernandez, who went all seven innings to get the win.

"Gerardo Hernandez pitched seven great innings for us," Maltby said. "I was starting to get a little worried about him in the sixth, and we talked about getting rid of him in the seventh when they had two runners on, but Coach Medellin went out and talked to him and he said he felt fine. When you're in those types of games and you're a senior, I'm not gonna take a kid out of the game. This was his game to win or to lose, and he finished a strong seven innings."
