Suspect Fires Flare Gun Outside Orange Coast Medical Center

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA — One person was in custody, Wednesday, after firing a flare gun into the air at a Fountain Valley Hospital.

Officers raced to MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center at 18000 block of Brookhurst St. at about noon, Fountain Valley Police Chief Matt Sheppard said.

One person was arrested, according to Sheppard.

"The subject fired what appears to be a flare gun in the air," he said. Reports from the scene say the firing took place outside the office of the executive director.

As of 2:30 p.m. the situation was resolved, and no active shooter threat remained, according to Sheppard.

Police did not immediately identify the male suspect or comment on a suspected motive, however the FBI was reported at the scene of the incident.

The hospital issued the following statement:

"The safety of our patients, families and staff is of the utmost importance. We notified the police of suspicious activity outside of the hospital today. Police responded and resolved the matter. The incident remained outside the hospital and our patients and staff are safe."
