Dig Deep Farms Brings Organic Agronomy To Ardenwood Historic Farm

FREMONT, CA — Organic farming is coming to Ardenwood Historic Farm this summer, according to the East Bay Regional Park District.

In a news release, the park district's board of directors announced it had signed a five-year lease with Dig Deep Farms, a nonprofit operation run by the Alameda County Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League.

Under the new partnership, Dig Deep will begin site preparations next month. Officials said the farm's first harvest is expected to be ready for in late summer or early fall.

“The Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Deputy Sheriffs’ Activities League and members of our community, started Dig Deep Farms 11 years ago because we recognized how public safety was impacted by more than just crime," Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern said in a statement. "Public safety includes improvement to issues that include our environment, public health, employment and education, along with the economic development of the area."

Located in Fremont, Ardenwood Historic Farms grows produce common to the area over the last century. And, it uses historical agricultural practices, according to a release.

"Dig Deep Farms uses traditional farming methods and applies years of Certified Organic Farming experience to work harmoniously with the land, minimizing waste and maximizing nutrient rich soil and produce,” Alameda County Supervisor Richard Valle said in a statement.
