DUI Checkpoint Tonight in Fremont
Drunken driving collisions drop by 20 percent when publicized checkpoints are held frequently, according to Fremont police.

The Fremont Police Department will be holding a DUI checkpoint tonight in an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related accidents.
The checkpoint will be held between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. early tomorrow morning, according to the Fremont Police Department.
At the checkpoint, officers will check drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment, as well as make sure drivers have proper licenses. Those caught driving while under the influence can face jail time, license suspension, insurance increases, fines and fees that can exceed $10,000, police said.

According to Fremont police, DUI checkpoints are proven to reduce the number of people injured or killed in alcohol and drug involved crashes.
“Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough,” Fremont police said in a media release.

Checkpoint locations are determined by collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests and are strategically placed to have the greatest opportunity in deterring drunken driving, police said.
Tonight’s checkpoint is funded by the Fremont Police Department via a California Office of Traffic Safety grant.
The Fremont Police Department reminds the public to call 9-1-1 if you see a drunk driver.
