Fremont Native Kristi Yamaguchi Accepts Jesse Owens Award

WASHINGTON D.C. – Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist and an East Bay native, was the recipient of the third annual Jesse Owens Olympic Spirit Award at the Team USA Awards ceremony held last week, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced.
The award embodies the Olympic Spirit, recognizing an individual who has served as a powerful force and inspiration for good in society and the world, the committee said.
Yamaguchi, 46, who grew up in Fremont, was highlighted for her Olympic success and her philanthropic pursuits, including launching the Always Dream Foundation.

"I was thoroughly touched during my own Olympic experience, as I knew that representing my country was indeed the highest honor," she said during her acceptance speech. "After 14 years of pursuing that dream, it was such a proud moment to be there competing with the world’s finest.
"I knew I wanted to be a positive influence for young children –to encourage them to follow their dreams. I found a new passion beyond the Olympics. I established the Always Dream Foundation with the idea that we would work to inspire the hopes and dreams of children I am so proud to say that we have succeeded in doing so for over 21 years."

The Always Dream Foundation focuses on the development of early-childhood literacy skills for youngsters in kindergarten through first grade. Read more on its efforts here.
"It is such a tribute to be included in the same breath as Jesse Owens, who inspired everyone with his strong commitment for positive change, equality and excellence," Yamaguchi said. "I hope to carry on with the same dedication, knowing that everyone should always dream."
Guest attendees at the evening event honoring Olympic and Paralympic athletes from the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games included Ivanka Trump, Vernon Davis and Mr. T, as well as such Olympic legends as Jeremy Bloom and Sasha Cohen.
The awards show, with NBC sportscaster Mike Tirico as host, will be televised as a 90-minute feature for the first time and will run from 6-7:30 p.m. ET May 12 on NBCSN. See more here.
