Patch caught up with Rennu Dhillon DSc., founder of Genius Kids, to learn more about her career in education, as well as the innovative school.
Patch: How long has the organization you represent been around in the community?

Dhillon: The organization was founded August 1, 2001. The first center of Genius Kids opened its doors to two students and has grown into a household name, recognized globally on various networks including CNNMoney.com, TV 5 Monde and KRON 4. The school has been described as “A School that Shapes Tomorrow’s Citizens” and “Most Likely Place to Find a Silicon Valley Inventor.”
Patch: What attracted you to the line of work you’re in, and how did you get started?
Dhillon: I have a BSc. in pharmacy and a doctorate in natural science. I was a high achiever in school, and having been born and raised in Kenya, I always felt that parents placed too much academic pressure on children and did not focus on the necessary soft skills for the future. I emigrated to California in 1986 and felt the education system was lacking the importance of building leadership and communication skills in children. I decided to open Genius Kids to teach public speaking skills. Due to the popularity, the demand expanded the business into full time day care and after school programs. My methodology involved accelerated learning using smart board technology, and every classroom had a stage and use of microphone. In 2011, I franchised the business model, and Genius Kids is now a highly successful and thriving business for ages 0-12.

Patch: If you had to sum up your business mission to a stranger, what would you say?
Dhillon: Today’s kids, tomorrow’s leaders.
Patch: What’s the biggest challenge or most difficult moment you’ve faced in your job?
Dhillon: The biggest challenge we have faced is being able to find viable and affordable locations in the Northern, CA area to expand and grow.
Patch: What’s the most satisfying part of your job?
Dhillon: The most gratifying part of this career is when former students come back to look for us or find us on social media to thank us for giving them the right foundation.
Patch: How would you say your business or organization distinguishes itself from the others?
Dhillon: We are clearly different from others because of how we develop confidence and leadership in children. Our classes are stimulating using interactive learning on the smart board, and hands-on class discussion (format of a corporate meeting) to teach students to participate in “round table discussions,” overcoming the fear of expression.
Patch: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given when it comes to success?
Dhillon: Live every day as if it were your last.
Patch: Are there any new projects or endeavors you’re working on that you’re extra excited about?
Dhillon: Yes, I am finalizing the launch of a complete online portal where students will be able to access our public speaking curriculum online.
Patch: Do you have any events coming up in your community?
Dhillon: At this time due to COVID-19, all of our events are on hold, otherwise we would have been hosting our annual public speaking competition called Win with Words.
Patch: How can Patch readers learn more about your work and business?
Dhillon: You can visit our website.
