A box filled with cremated human remains was found at a Fremont apartment complex over the weekend, police said.

Someone called police on Saturday to report finding a box that appeared to contain ashes at the Creekside Village Apartments at 2999 Sequoia Terrace.

The box was labeled with the decedent's name, a date and the crematorium it was from, police said.

Officers determined that the ashes had been stolen during an earlier car burglary and that the suspect had discarded the box at the apartment complex, according to police.

The family of the decedent was called and officers were able to return the remains, police said.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the burglary.
