Ohlone Sports Roundup: Baseball, Softball Revving Up

Renegades upend Contra Costa behind future UC Irvine pitcher Peter Van Loon's 14 K's.

The Ohlone College baseball team is hitting the road this week fresh off two convincing wins.

The Renegades (5-2), ranked third in the North by the CCCBCA, beat Contra Costa 7-2 on Feb. 5 and hammered Reedley 16-3 on Feb. 7, in a battle of playoff teams from last season.
Peter Van Loon, who is headed to UC Irvine, stole the show against Contra Costa. He allowed two hits and no earned runs and struck out 14 over 7.0 innings. A trio of relievers Tyler Stultz, Stas Kuntz and Zac Patterson nailed it down. Patterson also shined on offense with two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored. Third baseman Dalton Vanville had three RBIs. Matt Benavidez had a double and scored.
Ohlone brought the thunder against Reedley.
Patterson was an absolute beast with a grand slam, double and six RBIs.
Vanville did his part with a two-run double and a two-run home run. He was devastating from the leadoff spot, going 3 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored.
Luke O’Brien also doubled and homered.
Catcher Cody Nisbet and center fielder Max Heverly both had two hits. Nisbet drove in two runs and Heverly scored twice.
Starter Andrew Amato (2-0) scattered eight hits over 5.0 innings, striking out seven and walking one to collect the win. Four relievers combined to allow no runs, each with one inning of work: Nick Bouillerce, Anthony Wiley, Michael Bonaccorso and Ryan Robinson.
This week, Ohlone traveled to Laney on Monday, Feb. 11. Ohlone will head to Contra Costa on Feb. 12. The Renegades also have a three-game swing at Porterville on Feb. 15-16.

Ana Beard picked up the pitching win against Sequoias, scattering seven hits, striking out seven and walking two. She surrendered only one earned run.
In the sixth inning, Arrianna Whitlock brought home Gabby Moreno with an RBI single to give Ohlone a 1-0 lead. In the climactic ninth, Whitlock scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Alynna Ramirez.
The Renegades also dropped a 2-0 decision to San Joaquin Delta in Fresno. Karen Didio and Whitlock had Ohlone’s two hits off Delta ace Delaney Pamplin. Didio also worked a scoreless inning of relief.
Ohlone will host Sierra on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
