Ohlone weekly sports recap: Volleyball off to flying start

The Ohlone women’s volleyball team opened the 2018 season with a smash, or four straight wins by 3-0 scores.
Ohlone, guided by head coach Jeremy Penaflor, swept West Hills and Los Medanos in the Ohlone Classic, and then handled Columbia and Contra Costa in the Alameda Cougar Classic.
The Renegades will look to keep the good times rolling against Folsom Lake and Napa Valley in the Renegade Classic on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Ohlone then travels to Pleasant Hill for the DVC Classic on Friday, Sept. 7.
Sophomore outside hitter Sabrina Quilalong led the way against West Hills with 11 kills, six digs, and ace and a block in a 25-17, 25-20, 25-17 victory to open the Ohlone Classic. Sophomore libero Malia Silva led in digs with nine and sophomore setter Katie Souza led in assists with 20.
The Renegades next swept Los Medanos 25-16, 25-16, 25-10. Freshman opposite hitter Kylie Jacobs had seven kills, to go with a 0.294 hitting percentage. Freshman libero Elena Webster led in digs with 11. Sophomore setter Katie Souza led in assists with 20, to go with seven digs and an ace. Quilalong tied for the lead in kills with seven, to go with four aces and seven digs.
Then the Renegades Ohlone bested Columbia 25-18, 25-20, 25-13 in Alameda. Sophomore outside hitter Hailey Amaral tied for the lead in kills with eight, to go with a 0.389 hitting percentage. Souza amassed 21 assists and two aces, and Amaral tied for the lead in kills with eight, to go with a team-leading hitting percentage of 0.615 and one block. Quilalong also had eight kills, to go with three aces and five digs. Jacobs had six kills and a hitting percentage of 0.333.
Ohlone then rolled past Contra Costa 25-9, 25-10, 25-12, as freshman setter Raychelle Rebosura-Castillo had a big game with 19 assists and six aces, both teams highs. Amaral led with eight kills and a hitting percentage of 0.615, and had one block. Freshman opposite hitter Maddy McCallister had seven kills with a 0.600 hitting percentage. Webster had a team-best eight digs.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The Ohlone women’s soccer team opened with a gutsy 2-2 draw with West Hills-Coalinga at Cuesta College, and then fell 5-0 to host Cuesta.
In the tie, Ohlone battled back twice from one-goal deficits. Yamille Ramirez scored to tie it 1-1 in the 75th minute, and then after West Hills retook the lead six minutes later, Ramirez assisted Jasmine Pacheco in the 86th minute to even it again, 2-2.
This week, Ohlone (0-1-2) battled Solano to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday. Victoria Lochead scored for Ohlone off a Mariah Finnigan assist in the 23rd minute. The Renegades travel to Modesto on Friday. The Renegades’ home opener is against West Valley on Sept. 11, at 1:30 p.m.
MEN’S SOCCER
The Ohlone men’s soccer team opened the season with a 4-0 loss to visiting Butte (2-0). The Renegades (0-1-1) battled Merritt (1-0-2) to a scoreless draw on Tuesday this week.
WOMEN’S WATER POLO
The Renegades, under new head coach Megan Ottoboni, will kick off the new season in the Las Positas Mini Tournament on Sept. 7.
MEN’S WATER POLO
The Renegades (1-1), guided by head coach Mitchell Youhanna, split games against Big 8 Conferences foes in the season-opening Las Positas Mini Tournament, falling 17-12 to American River and rebounding to beat Santa Rosa 15-11.
Ohlone will next compete in the Nyquist Tournament at De Anza on Friday and Saturday, facing De Anza, Modesto, Cuesta, and Diablo Valley.
