Resident Fires Shots at Prowler

Police advise residents to call 9-1-1 immediately rather than take matters into their own hands.

A Fremont resident warded off a possible intruder Friday evening by firing shots at the suspect, police said.

While no one was hurt during the incident, police advise residents to alert authorities immediately rather than take matters into their own hands.

“We’d always ask that you call 9-1-1 right away if someone is in your yard and prowling,” said Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.

“Our officers were so close by. Had we received a 9-1-1 call first, we may have caught the suspect before this happened,” Bosques said.

The incident occurred at about 6:50 p.m. at a home on the 40100 block of Besco Drive. A husband and wife were in a rear room of their home when they saw a male suspect standing outside of their sliding door.

The husband grabbed a pistol and confronted the suspect in the backyard. The husband told police that he felt scared and fired several shots as the suspect attempted to flee. The husband left the gun at home and chased after the suspect over a fence and onto Stevenson Boulevard. He lost sight of the suspect near Sundale Drive.

Multiple residents called police after hearing the gunshots. A nearby officer also heard about five to seven gunshots, but responding units were unable to locate the suspect.

No evidence of wounding was found at the scene and officers confiscated the husband’s weapon as evidence, police said.

The suspect was described as a black male, about 6-feet tall with long dreadlocks and a black jacket.
