Safety Modifications To Be Made At 2 Major Fremont Intersections

FREMONT, CA — As the Bay Area's fourth largest city grows and approaches a population of 250,000, it is reconfiguring its major intersections to provide improved traffic flow and additional safety measures for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The latest intersections being modified by the city of Fremont are along Fremont Boulevard at Mowry Avenue and at Stevenson Boulevard. As part of the Fremont Boulevard Intersection Safety Improvements Project, the two intersections -- among the city's busiest in terms of vehicular traffic -- are being modernized and modified with pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements.

At Fremont Boulevard/Mowry Avenue and Fremont Boulevard/Stevenson Boulevard, the project consists of removing the existing "pork chop" traffic islands at each corner of the intersections and removing the eight existing right-turn slip lanes at both intersections, replacing it with buffered bike lanes.

The modifications also include constructing new protected refuge traffic islands at each corner of the two intersections and removing and replacing existing traffic signals at each intersection.
The center median islands will be modified to support the realignment of the traffic lanes to provide a better approach for motorists driving through each of the intersections.

Green buffered bike lanes will also be added at each intersection.

Construction began in late April. Work will be completed this summer.
