FREMONT 

Garbage Strike Cancels Collection Services

Fremont went without garbage, recycling, and yardwaste Thursday and Friday due to a labor dispute, according to a notice posted on the city web site this morning. On Wednesday, Union City officials notified their residents of a two-day garbage service interruption owing to an unspecified labor dispute. Both cities have their trash collected by Allied Waste Services/Republic Services, the nation's second largest garbage company.

Food Trucks to Return to Fremont Next Week

Food trucks will soon be making their way into Fremont again. The Food Truck Mafia will begin its frequent visits into Fremont this month, according to April Bibbins, Food Truck Mafia Event Coordinator. Each Food Truck Mafia event makes multiple food trucks, which serve different types of food, available to event goers to purchase. Niles Street Eats is slated to return first on April 10 and Fremont Street Eats will come back to town on April 26.

Man Stabbed at Homeless Encampment 

A man was hospitalized Tuesday night after being stabbed multiple times at a homeless encampment, police said. Fremont police said officers responded to the area of Commerce Drive and Paseo Padre Parkway around 7:45 p.m. Authorities arrived and found the victim "seriously bleeding" from multiple stab wounds, and was taken to a local trauma center and was treated for major, but non-life treatening, injuries, Fremont police said. 

NEWARK

Newark Ready to Catch Next Retail Wave

Retail trends come in waves and Newark is poised to catch the next swell, according to city economic development director Terrence Grindall. Despite announcements that TJ Maxx and Men’s Wearhouse locations will soon open in Fremont – three miles away from their locations in Newark – Grindall expressed optimism for Newark businesses. "These things come in waves and we're working with our property owners to try to catch the next one," Grindall said. Read more by clicking here.

Shooting on Civic Terrace Deemed Gang-Related  

Police announced this week that a shooting that occurred on March 29 was gang-related. In that shooting, 1n 18-year-old man was struck by gunfire around 2:30 a.m. He suffered wounds to his lower abdomen and and was treated at a local hospital. Police have not released further details about the shooting.

Rasputin Music Now Open at NewPark Mall 

Rasputin Music has officially opened back up in Newark. The music store is opened its NewPark Mall location on Friday. The store is located on the lower level of the shopping center's near Sears. Known to buy and cell CDs, DVDs, LPs, videos and games, Rasputin Music occupies a 9,661-square-foot space inside of the mall.

UNION CITY

14 Arrested in Union City Prostitution Sting

Authorities arrested14 individuals Thursday in a joint operation at the Crowne Plaza Hotel led by the Union City’s community policing unit and the Alameda County Vice Enforcement Team. The objective of the sting was to recover sexually exploited juveniles as well as arrest juvenile and adult prostitutes, pimps and “johns.” However, no minors were located, Union City police said. The suspects were subsequently arrested misdemeanor prostitution and soliciting prostitution charges, police said.

Labor Dispute Halts Garbage Service for Two Days

A labor dispute between Allied Waste and Teamsters caused a disruption to garbage collection services in Union City on Thursday and Friday. City officials said garbage service is scheduled to resume Monday. The strike also impacted Fremont.

Man Sentenced to 128 Years for Molesting 7-Year-Old Girl

A Hayward man was sentenced Wednesday to 128 years in state prison after being convicted of several sex crimes, including molesting a 7-year-old girl in Union City in 2010. Prosecutors said the 39-year-old man was allowed to take the girl to a Halloween party and that after the party he engaged in sexual activities with the child. Read more details here.
