GILROY, CA — Santa Clara Valley received a complete makeover Saturday, with a tour de force picking up more than 50,000 pounds of trash for the California Coastal Cleanup Day.
Almost 2,000 people in a consortium of public agencies and nonprofit organizations known as the Creek Connections Actions Group cleaned up 47 Santa Clara County sites totaling 51,240 pounds over 51 miles of stream beds such as Coyote Creek.
"We're proud of the big turnout by our volunteers for (the California) Coastal Cleanup Day. The volunteers in the South Bay demonstrated that people can come
together to keep Santa Clara County's streams clear of harmful pollutants, which
in addition to contaminating water, and harming birds and wildlife, can block our
creeks and cause flooding,” Valley Water Board Chairwoman Linda J. LeZotte said.
