MONTEREY COUNTY - A motorcyclist who was part of the Amgen Tour of California cycling race safety team died Wednesday morning while working on state Highway 1 in unincorporated Monterey County, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The first report of the incident came in at 11:44 a.m. on Highway 1 about 10 miles north of the San Luis Obispo County line.
A caller told the CHP that the person started choking, then lost consciousness and the motorcycle went down, CHP Officer Oscar Loza said.

A passenger on the motorcycle was unhurt, Loza said.
Stage 4 of the Amgen Tour of California is taking place Wednesday, with bicyclists heading north from Morro Bay in San Luis Obispo County to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey County.
