GILROY, CA — Gilroy has transformed its "Bike to Work Day" into a May month of "Bike to Wherever Days" with cycling promotions, designed to encourage locals to peddle about for their errands, work commutes and fresh-air exercise.

Upcoming is one day set aside for special festivities — Saturday, May 21 — with a "Ride the Levee" event coordinated with the City of Gilroy’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition.

Ride the Levee at the "Energizer Tent" begins at 7 a.m. and runs through 2:30 p.m. at Miller Avenue and Uvas Park Drive, with snacks and SWAG for the first 250 riders that pledge to ride.

A "Ride Around Gilroy Gardens" event also set May 21 appears to be sold out. But check here for possible updates.

The City of Gilroy’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission is promoting these events with the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition.

Gilroy is a League of American Wheelman Bronze Badge winner as a bicycle-friendly community, due to Gilroy’s efforts to expand and enhance its bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. Bicycle lanes around town are clearly marked and some streets allow bicyclists to take the full lane, coupled with bicycle repair stations and bike parking spots around town.

The five-member Bicycle Pedestrian Commission, (BPAC), that advises city staff and City
Council on matters related to bicyclists and pedestrians, remains a big supporter of Bike To Work Day / Bike to Anywhere Month in Gilroy.

"As many are working from home during the pandemic, residents are taking to the streets!," the commission said. "More folks and families than ever are rolling and walking around Gilroy neighborhoods, to retail centers and parks. Our residents access the town by taking advantage of the pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure whether it be for recreation, shopping or commuting to work.

"The BPAC is excited about the evolution of Bike to Work Day to Bike To Wherever Month and looks forward to meeting local riders at the two Energizer Stations May 21."
