Domestic Violence Suspect Arrested After 5-Hour Police Standoff

Gilroy High and Glenview Elementary schools were locked down during the incident Wednesday.

A man wanted for two domestic violence charges engaged Gilroy police in a five-hour standoff Wednesday before officers used "chemical agents" to force the 26-year-old from his hiding place, police reported Thursday.

The standoff began around 11 a.m. when officers learned Richard Castaneda was staying at a home on the 700 Block of West Eight Street. But "uncooperative residents" made it impossible for officers to locate Castaneda, police said.

Officers got other residents, including two women and children, out of the home while trying to negotiate with Castaneda. He refused to leave so, around 4 p.m., officers used other means to force him from the home.

He surrendered peacefully, police reported.

Nearby Gilroy High School and Glenview Elementary School both were put on lockdown during the incident, police said.

Castaneda was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and for his domestic violence-related felonies.
