Gilroy Expulsion Rate Plummets: Report

But advocacy group says the District's policy to reduce expulsions has have negatively impacted Black and Latino students, the report said.

GILROY, CA — The Gilroy Unified School District said it’s experienced a dramatic drop in the number of expulsions over the last decade, The Gilroy Dispatch reports.

The District averaged about 100 expulsions annually between 2007 and 2008 but that rate has fallen to below 20 according to the report, which notes just 15 students were expelled during the 2019-2020 school year.

But according to an advocacy group the District’s policy to reduce expulsions has have negatively impacted Black and Latino students, the report said.

The Gilroy Community Action on Policing has urged the District to reconsider its use of school resource officers and a “zero tolerance” policy that disproportionally impact persons of color according to the report.
